its kind of unbeleivble to come to find such treasures of yesteryears.
i hav inherited a taste for begum sahiba (begum akhtar) from my mom n my dad.
and i listen to her and only her as per Ghazals….takes all my tension and exertion away.
i m 22 yrs. My friends are left with their mouth wide open when they listen to my taste.
professionally i m an architect so hardly find any free time to surf but whenevr i hav a second free i m searching for that intoxicating voice thru’out net but its one in a blue moon that i find ANYTHING of hers.
but this site is something that cud b really termed as a rare GEM. i was amazed to find it. thanx 4 giving me some devine musical moments.
EXPECTING MORE FROM YOU
please keep it up.
all yours,
swapnil

Dear Jasjeet,
If you have a cleaner copy of that thumri I would love to hear it. I am a music student in London studying Indian classical music, and I am just about to write an essay about Begum Akhtar and thumri…

bhanvra re, ham pardesi log
kab ke bichhdey aan mile hain, nadiya naav sanjog.
the nadiya naav sanjog is a very powerful simile.
i wonder if there were more verses to this thumri. i suspect there were. thumri compositions were almost never so brief.
dear webmaster,
would you please check this recording again? i think the pitch of the recording has been raised somewhat above the original.

Pandeji, probably a duplication artifact — this is how my copy sounds, as I remember. I am going to re-digitize the tape one of these days and I will see if comes out any different.
The same thumri has been sung by Shipra Bose who learnt from Begum. There is one more stranza in this Thumri.
hum pardesi, tum pardesi
bhali bani hai yog
jabse bhanvra bhaye bidesi
bisar gaye sukh-bhog
Dear Webmaster,
What a treasure-trove.
Hearty thanks for taking all
the trouble.
And Pande ji is right. There was a longer
version, I purchased in New York from World Music
about ten years ago, but unfortunately lost it to a friend.
Jasjeetji
In her Akhtari Bai Faizabadi days, Begum Akhtar sang a ‘lost’ song called Tu Ne Buth e Harjaee, Ye Kaisi Ada Pai. I remember hearing a scratchy audio recording of this song and was told it was from 1933. I distinctly remember hear the singer saying hurriedly at the end of the song “Mera Naam Akhtari Bai Faizabadi”….Is there any way to track down this song in that original recording? And any details on what period of her life, Akhtari Bai sang it and who composed it would be very helpful and much appreciated.
Kind Regards
